From pixels to packets: why the DPU era is the next "GPU moment" (and how you can make it real)

A new way of seeing

When I was a kid, I spent countless hours glued to my PC, immersed in pixelated battlefields and blocky 3D adventures. I still remember the day I installed a 3dfx Voodoo graphics card and loaded up Quake — but this time, GPU-accelerated. The lighting was real. The shadows moved. Everything looked… alive. It was like seeing in 20/20 for the first time.

We didn’t know it then, but that was the birth of an era. The GPU didn’t just make games better — it reshaped industries, from media to AI.

And now, we’re at the dawn of a new transformation: the rise of the DPU (Data Processing Unit). 

While 3dfx faded into history 20+ years ago, one name has become synonymous with GPUs: our partner NVIDIA. It’s also leading the charge in DPUs. Products like BlueField-3 DPU bring unmatched hardware capabilities to the table — 400Gbps bandwidth, PCIe Gen5, and programmable Arm cores.

Like the GPU before it, the DPU promises to offload and accelerate an entire class of operations that the CPU just wasn’t built to handle efficiently. And this time, the stakes are even higher: it’s about redefining how modern infrastructure runs and who gets to build on top of it.

The evolution of the xPU stack

To understand why the DPU is a game-changer, let’s look at how we got here:

  • CPU (Central Processing Unit): The generalist — designed for serial tasks, and good at doing a lot of different things reasonably well. It’s the brains, but it’s juggling a lot.

  • GPU (Graphics Processing Unit): The specialist in parallelism — originally for rendering frames, now the engine behind AI, ML, and data processing. It showed us that some workloads are better when offloaded.

  • DPU (Data Processing Unit): The new powerhouse — purpose-built to offload networking, storage, and security operations. Not just for acceleration, but for isolation, programmability, and efficiency.

If the GPU was a moment of visual clarity, the DPU is one of architectural clarity. It's not just about faster; it's about better, smarter, and more secure infrastructure. That’s the 20/20 moment platform engineers are starting to feel when they deploy DPUs.

What you can do with DPUs

When DPUs are deployed and orchestrated correctly, they unlock entirely new software ecosystems where security, storage, and network functions move closer to the data and run more efficiently. Here's what that translates to for real customers:

🔹 Storage: A media company offloads NVMe-over-Fabric services to the DPU, reducing CPU utilization by 30% and enabling 8K asset streaming during prime hours without frame drops.

🔹 Security: A healthcare provider runs microsegmentation and inline threat detection directly on DPUs, ensuring zero-trust compliance without adding latency to sensitive patient applications.

🔹 Networking: A telco accelerates 5G user-plane functions (UPF) by running them on DPUs, doubling packet throughput and cutting data path latency by 40%.

And it’s not just enterprise teams accessing these benefits directly. Software companies — from storage vendors to security ISVs — are starting to build DPU-native services that get deployed in customer environments the same way they'd deploy apps on a VM or container.

What’s the catch?

Taking advantage of DPUs in your Kubernetes clusters, just like with GPUs, means deploying some specialist software, like drivers, along with appropriate configurations to take advantage of the hardware capabilities. NVIDIA’s hardware may be impressive, but it’s the software experience that defines its real-world impact.
